Philosophy of Teaching Statement
I hold the dual title of Artist and Teacher. Both of these titles are anchored by my drive to be a lifelong learner and to impart this value to my students. I believe to be the best Educator I must strive to acknowledge that there is always more to learn and to grow in both in my own art practice and my teaching methodologies. I must always go first so students can follow after.
I believe that all students have the ability to produce great work. My job is to give them the tools, support, and confidence in their inbuilt abilities to get them from where they are to where they want to be. My purpose is to aid students to gain the critical thinking and technical skills needed to best communicate their ideas, passions, and interests and make work that is meaningful to them. I aim to increase students' sense of autonomy by, whenever possible, allowing them to pursue their personal interests within their work. All pupils are encouraged to value their own and others' opinions and to give thought-out visual, verbal, and written feedback in response to Art and concepts safely investigated within the classroom.
I acknowledge that most of my students will not grow up to be working artists, however I believe that the valuable skills gained in the Art room (appreciation of art, knowledge of art history, technical skills, creative thinking and problem solving) will massively assist them in the ever changing world where divergent thinking is a skill constantly sought after by new employers. They will also serve them long after school as a reliable creative outlet in a stressful world.
